The Town of Burgeo is a place where summer is something you can settle into. You can spend your daytime in wide-open spaces, then come back into town for an evening that feels local, relaxed, and real.

A Mawio’mi is a gathering hosted by the Qalipu First Nation at Sandbanks Provincial Park in the Town of Burgeo, in Newfoundland and Labrador. It carries meaning. It’s rooted in relationships - between people, place, and tradition. It runs this year on July 31 and August 1, 2026.

There are places that feel like they’re performing for you. And then there’s Sandbanks Provincial Park. A place that just IS. Long, pale beaches. Rolling dunes. That big-sky quiet that makes your shoulders drop before you even find the waterline.

July in the Town of Burgeo has a particular rhythm. Days stretch out. The light hangs around. And the town starts to feel like it’s your regular third space, even if you’re just passing through.

There are places that feel less like a destination and more like the horizon of the known world. Burgeo, on Newfoundland and Labrador’s rugged Southwest Coast, is one such place. It is a community nestled where the island’s core meets the Atlantic’s beautiful expanse, a corner holding a magnificent and almost improbable contradiction.

As tourism operators across Newfoundland and Labrador, we are deeply disappointed by the Provincial Government’s decision to withdraw from the South Coast Fjords National Marine Conservation Area feasibility study.

A question on a lot of people’s minds in Burgeo is a simple one: "Am I still going to be allowed to go to my cabin?"

Burgeo’s small businesses are defined by resilience and hard work. But there is one thing even the hardest working entrepreneur cannot overcome: the fog of uncertainty.

If you strip away the noise, an NMCA (national marine conservation area) is an economic signal.

If you live or work on the Southwest Coast, your routine is a compass: cabins on weekends, a boat in the water when weather allows, a season that rises and falls with the fish.

For too long, the idea of a National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) has been surrounded by whispers and worries.

A healthy coast means happy visitors and steady local income. We can protect our natural beauty and grow our economy at the same time.
